Forgiveness is freeing
Forgiveness is freeing.
I'll be the first to admit that true forgiveness can be hard. Especially when the thing that was done to you was unbelievably hurtful. But has any one ever noticed how unforgiveness can rot away the joy in life? It seems to be accompanied by anger, bitterness, sadness and a host of other emotions. Now you've got the hurt of that situation and all the associated symptoms lingering inside of you. Let me tell you, all that extra weight can be burdensome. It impairs your ability to love, to think and see the good in people.
At times that unforgiveness is towards our own selves. Perhaps you've done something you're not proud of and that is weighing you down. (Please read this: "If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" -1 John 1:9).
In the Bible, we are told to forgive (Matthew 6:14-15). And while at first this seems like an unachievable request, we ought to realise how beneficial that instruction actually is to us. He knows what unforgiveness can do to you.
Forgiveness, when done sincerely, is freeing. I'll tell you now, it feels good. I know that I'm loved and forgiven by God, and I ought to do the same for others, but sometimes it's tempting to say "but God, that person hurt me so badly" or "I can't forgive myself for this". Let me tell you this - forgiveness is as beneficial for you as it is for the other person. Maybe even more so!
We all need to be forgiven.
I want to be like Christ. I want my character to be like His. But, how can I truly do this if I don't forgive?
Maybe you aren't a Christian and you're struggling with forgiveness, recognise that unforgiveness is hurting you even more than it's hurting the person you're angry at. I know they hurt you, but the unforgiveness is killing you.
Here's a scripture to end this all with: "And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another just as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32)
